The Enneagram is a profound and powerful guide to understanding inner workings, motivations and pathway to transformation. Stemming from the Greek words ennea (nine) and grammos (a written symbol), the nine-pointed Enneagram symbol represents nine distinct strategies for relating to the self, others and the world. Rooted in the Desert Fathers and the mystics, each Enneagram type has a different pattern of thinking, feeling and acting that arises from a deeper inner motivation or worldview—it has been called a sacred psychology (Riso & Husdon, 1999). As a spiritual care provider and mental health professional, I have searched for a tool that goes beyond mere preferences like the Myers-Briggs, the 16PF or the generalization of DISC system. The Enneagram is the best system that I have found to reveal our deep passions, motivation, and fears and it provides Directions of Integration (true self) and Disintegration (false self) that are unique to each type and providing a pathway to liberation. As a follower of Jesus, I appreciate it is compatible with basic Biblical teaching especially in connection with the seven deadly sins. However, the tool is for people of all faiths. In a collective sense, the Enneagram fosters greater understanding through a universal language that transcends gender, religion, nationality and culture. While we are all unique, we share common experiences.
